2018 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Strategy Guide

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is, hands down, THE biggest sale of the year – it’s a must-promote for influencers, and can lead to some major commission payments. We’re sharing our best strategies, content ideas, and insider sale info, just for our MagicLinks Community!

It’s a long post, but we promise, it’s totally worth it. Grab an iced coffee, sit back, and read on!


  • Early Access for Nordstrom Cardholders (Online Only): Thursday, July 12 – Thursday, July 19, 2018.
  • Public Access (Online and In-Store): Friday, July 20 – Sunday, August 5, 2018. Please note: The sale is in-store only in Canada. Online content strategy and sales do not apply to for this event.


  • Now – July 31, 2018: 8% gross commission + 14-day cookie window
  • August 1, 2018 – November 1, 2018: 10% gross commission + 14-day cookie window

Seriously, start posting your advance sale recommendations now, to get ahead of the incoming flood of influencer posts on all social platforms. The top-earning days for the sale (and influencers) as a whole are usually:

  • First day of private access: July 12, 2018
  • Second day of private access: July 13, 2018
  • First day of public access: July 20, 2018

Before the sale begins, start drumming up excitement with

  • Short posts (tweets, IG photos) with links to deals and items you can’t wait to shop
  • Category-focused sale guides for shoes, women’s fall clothes, beauty products, etc
  • Key date announcements for the sale – plugging the early access for Nordstrom cardholders will get you more clicks, ‘cause no one wants to miss out on the best styles if they sell out during the Early Access Event for cardholders! In addition to exclusive early sale shopping, Cardholders also earn 2 points per dollar, a $40 bonus Nordstrom Note on any Nordstrom purchase made with card on the day it is approved
  • Tag posts with #Nordstrom

When the sale is live:

  • Post 2 to 4 shoppable product posts per day across your channels, to keep fueling interest, especially on items about to sell out. This is a GREAT opportunity to use links in IGTV videos and save Instagram Stories to your Instagram Highlights Archive as a “Nordstrom 2018 Anniversary Sale Shopping Links” category!

Prep your picks using Nordstrom’s official Anniversary Sale Catalogs:

Create your MagicLinks to items so that you can talk them up, before they’re live, then re-post once savings are live.

    Note: Brand new arrivals will only be found in the sale catalog before the Anniversary Sale is live, not on For any of these new arrival items you want to promote, make a list of the item name & number to quickly find & create MagicLinks for them once the sale is active.

MagicLinks recommends keeping your roundups category-specific (i.e. “My 10 Must-Have Shoes From the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale”) to make them SEO friendly and easy to find. Last year’s top-selling product categories included:

  • purses
  • intimate apparel

Map out your posts on your Content Calendar and get things scheduled in advance using a content management tool, like MagicLinks partner HootSuite, which works across all social media platforms.

Everyone loves giving their opinion, right? So, ask ‘em for it. “What kinds of items are you looking to purchase during the sale?” “Do you prefer try-on hauls, item reviews, or other content?”

    Listening to your audience’s opinion is one of the best earnings tools any influencer possesses. Give the people what they want!

Many shoppers look to influencers for details on sizing (does an item fit true to size?), colors, styling with other products, etc. Adding details about these kinds of commonly asked questions to your captions can increase your clicks.

Were you a MagicLinks member last year? Check your Performance Reports for Nordstrom during last year’s Anniversary Sale dates: July 13-20, 2017 for early access, and July 21-August 6, 2017 for public access. You can manually enter the date range for the Retailer and individual Links tabs to focus on what products did well for you last year, and what days got you the most clicks & sales.

Influencers may not use “Nordstrom” or any Nordstrom trademarked/branded terms in paid media, including: paid search, paid advertising, or paid Facebook/Instagram posts. You can post about Nordstrom, but you cannot pay to boost those posts if you are using Nordstrom branded/trademarked terms. Please tag your posts with #Nordstrom.

    Thanks for the info, Janet! In regards to the legalese, can you boost a post that does not include Nordstrom in the title but references the Nordstrom sale in the body of the post?

    • Hi Steve,

      I would not do so, because the sale is still referenced in the post and will appear in search results. Like many retailers, Nordstrom monitors these things closely and you don’t want your commissions revoked due to a violation of their T.O.S.
